Role Playing News
Requesting a Link
If you are looking for us to add a link to your page, you have come to the right place.
Let me try and put this the simplest way possible. No.
Since I started the RPN web site, I have received a large number of requests to
add links to people’s pages. Many people start their email to me with something like,
"I really enjoyed looking at your pages..." However, if they really did look at my site,
they would have noticed that I do not have a links page. This is for three major reasons.
- Most sites requesting links are just advertising. I do look at the sites
requesting links, and I find most of them contain only five or six pages. There is a
home page, and a few pages for the various products they have. Most give very little
description of anything other than why their system is better then everyone else’s. As
I could care less about the type of system I use, these pages are useless to me. I also
could care less about whether you are selling a system, world, campaign, whatever or
just giving it away. Most pages have far too many graphics that take three to five
minutes to download. I don’t even stick around to read the two lines of text on these
pages. Interesting role-playing comes from creating things yourself. If you want good
material to build a game with, go to a bookstore.
- We, the editors of RPN, do this in our spare time. When we don’t have time,
because we are busy at our jobs, with friends, or even having a life, RPN gets
pushed to the side. Note that at one time we went two years before getting another issue
out. A links page takes great amounts of time. Pages come and go, and there is nothing more
useless then a page of links that don’t work. I just don’t want to spend my time working on
that.
- A links page does not serve our readers. If you are looking for role-playing web
sites, there are many good lists of pages already on the Internet. There is no reason for
us to duplicate this service. I am planning on starting to write reviews of web sites.
However, before you rush into asking me to review your site, reread reason 1 and ask
yourself whether you think I would give your site a good review. Now if you are sure
you want me to look at your site, you can email me at
typo@shore.net.
